Many theorists have pointed out that the essence of a culture can be found in the degree of its domination of, or independence from, nature. In order to undertake the conquest of external nature, man had to conquer his own internal nature, making women the repository of all the qualities within him which he had come to fear and despise. This transformation amounted to nothing less than the transformation of human beings, male, and female, as well as the rest of the natural world, into the means of production.
