In the Neighborhood of Freedom

February 1- 29, 2020

Artist Kevin Demery has created “In the Neighborhood of Freedom,” an installation and investigation of the year 1964, a time significant for the passage of the civil rights act and major shifts in the cultural landscape. Reclaiming found images of social unrest and political upheaval from 1964, Demery uses an acetone-based printmaking process to extract specific parts of the images to to give breath to poetic moments and call into question the relationship of that time to our current political climate within North America. Some of the parts of the images lost in the printing process have been drawn back in as an attempt to recover a collective lost memory. 150 of these images are joined by sculptural elements and text based works. The exhibition will be on view throughout the month of February in conjunction with Black History Month.
